“It Comes In PINTS?”

with 2 comments

Now they’re messing with the Holy Water. According to this article, there are some drinking establishments out there that are trying to get away with selling 14 ounce “pints” of beer.

As someone who works in the metrology industry, I’m here to tell you that that’s just WRONG. Anyone who passed the 3rd grade can tell you that a pint is 16 ounces. And if you sell a “pint”, it should be 16 ounces. No discussion necessary. Or allowed.

  1. This has been going on for years. Some time back I was in a place where I got a bottle of beer. I asked for a glass (because good beer ought to be drunk from a glass, not the bottle) and the bartender handed me one of the glasses he used for tap beer and referred to as “pints”. Surprise, my 12 ounce bottle of beer nearly filled the glass.

About the only “honest” pint glasses I’ve encountered in the last ten or so years are the Guiness-type glasses with the bulge up near the top. The straight-sided glasses (usually with a beer company logo printed on them) are pretty much always short. I also have some half-liter beer mugs I bought at Ikea years ago, I keep a few of those in the freezer. There’s even a line on them marking the half-liter level, and it’s well below the top to allow for the head.

BTW, how’s your problem with your legs doing?

  2. I’ve noticed the same trend. Many establishments will serve their alleged “pints” in pilsner glasses that are clearly NOT capable of holding a pint.

A sad state of affairs for those of us that truly love beer.
