In an earlier post, I mentioned that I didn’t know the reason behind the celebration of Chanukah. A friend has educated me, and I have the honor of passing it on to all of you.

Chanukah is the celebration of cleaning and rededicating the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem after the Greeks had Hellenized it. The Jews were able to find only one day’s worth of lamp oil, yet that lasted for 8 days (it took 8 days to prepare new oil). Chanukah commemorates that a “Great Miracle Happened There.” (The Hebrew letters for each of those four words are on each side of the dreidle.)

See, all you have to do is ask! Ain’t it grand?
