Yes, I agree that English spelling doesn’t always make sense.  But there are reasons for the illogic.  As Mo points out, the spelling of a word relates it back to its origin.  The root word, invariably pilfered from some other language (as English borrows heavily from German, Latin and Greek, which are unrelated to each other), will show itself in the spelling.  If you don’t know the meaning of the word, but recognize it’s root you can usually surmise what the writer is saying.  Which doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t look it up later when you have the chance, to get the exact meaning.

Put me on record as being PRO-spelling bees, and ANTI-phonetic spelling.
